Rockies 5, Giants 4: Chacin throws seven brilliant innings

'The Machine' dominated tonight and then the Rockies hung on for the win.

Christian Petersen

Jhoulys Chacin gave up no hits and just two walks to the first 24 batters he faced.  However, he wasn't five outs away from throwing a complete game shutout, no hitter before the Giants' Brandon Crawford hit a soft single to center field.  Thanks to two errors by Wilin Rosario at first and one rare miscue by Troy Tulowitzki at short, the Giants had multiple base runners and scored in the run in the third.  So it was that Chacin was at 100 pitches when Crawford got the first hit for San Francisco with two outs in the seventh.

Jhoulys finished the seventh and then turned over a 5-1 to the bullpen which was a little shakey but preserved the win.  Wilton Lopez was charged with two runs in his third of an inning although they scored with Josh Outman and Matt Belisle on the mound.  Outman was also charged a run when Belisle gave up a hit to Hunter Pence.  Rex Brothers came in to earn the save in the ninth inning to win the series.

The Rockies earned their first run of the game off a RBI double by Nolan Arenado in the second.  They then took advantage of some erratic pitching and defense by the Giants to score four runs in the sixth, the last of which scored when Chacin ran out a ground ball to break up a potential double play.  Unfortunately Charlie Blackmon and Michael Cuddyer operated South of the border, each wearing the quadruple strikeout "golden sombrero".

I like watching Rockies' pitching dominate, I enjoy winning close games, and I love beating the Giants so this was a great game for me.  I hope that the rest of you enjoyed it as well.  Just think, Chacin is only 25 and, with luck, will have a lot more opportunities to throw no hitters for this team.
