The Rockies salvaged at least a little bit of hope by beating the Pirates on Friday, and it doesn't hurt their cause that Michael Cuddyer is back in the lineup on Saturday.
Now, they just need Jorge De La Rosa to get back on track.
The wheels came off for De La Rosa in Atlanta on Monday, when he allowed eight runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits in five innings of work. Worse, he was unable to hold on to a 5-0 lead during the first game after a homestand in which the Rockies struggled mightily to score against a trio of the National League's worst teams.
De La Rosa will have his work cut out for him tonight, as he'll face Pirates starter Francisco Liriano, who is enjoying the same type of success he had in Minnesota before suffering an arm injury that forced him to miss the entire 2007 season. Liriano owns a 2.16 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9.
