Mets 3, Rockies 2: Bettis good; Lopez, offense bad

Chad Bettis improved from his first MLB start, but did not get the required run support in a 3-2 loss to the Mets.

An infield single and the speed of Eric Young Jr. were the Rockies undoing in this one as Wilton Lopez was charged with the winning run in the eighth inning of a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The eighth was Lopez's second inning of work in a 2-2 game. Young led the inning off with a single before Daniel Murphy and Marlon Byrd flew out, the latter of which moved Young to second. With the count 3-1 on Ike Davis, the Rockies decided to intentionally walk him to face Juan Lagares with two on and two out. Lagares hit a weak ground ball that Lopez couldn't get to for an infield single, and Young's speed allowed him to scamper home from second with the winning run when DJ LeMahieu threw late to first and Todd Helton hesitated before looking home.

Lagares also played a key role in the Mets obtaining an early lead in the first inning. Rockies starter Chad Bettis gave up a single to Murphy and a double to Davis before Lagares delivered a two-out, two-run triple to give New York an early 2-0 lead.

The Rockies finally got to Mets starter Jenrry Mejia in the fifth when Wilin Rosario singled, advanced to third on an Ike Davis error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Arenado.

Bettis was removed for pinch hitter Charlie Blackmon in the top of the sixth after allowing just two runs on four hits with a walk and a pair of strike outs. The young righty retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. Blackmon then fouled a bunt off of home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez, causing a 17-minute delay as he was removed from the game. After the delay, Blackmon came back and hit a solo home run to tie the game at two, where it remained until Young scored the winning run in the eighth.

The task doesn't get any easier for the Rockies tomorrow as they face Mets ace Matt Harvey in the second game of the series.
