D-Backs 13, Rockies 9: Helton's big day for naught

New, comments

The Rockies lost a slug fest on Sunday afternoon. Both teams amassed 19 hits, but Arizona's five run ninth inning proved too much for a Rockies come back.

Dustin Bradford

Juan Nicasio got hit, and he got hit hard. Nicasio allowed seven hits, including four for extra bases, and seven runs in just 2.1 innings while also walking two. It was a poor outing any way you paint it as Nicasio saw his record fall to 8-9 and his ERA balloon to 5.32. However, the Rockies fought back and actually got to D-backs starter Patrick Corbin, but it was to little to late in this one as a four run ninth inning couldn't overcome an eight run deficit

The game wasn't all ugly for Rockies fans, in a game that saw eight pitchers throw, five of them actually pitched well. Jeff Francis went 1.2 innings scoreless and Drew Pomeranz delivered another good relief inning. The Rockies also saw Josh Outman, Adam Ottavino and Manny Corpas not surrender earned runs. The only problem is that a game lasting nine innings shouldn't need eight pitchers, but in addition to Nicasio's blow up, Wilton Lopez surrendered yet another run and Chad Bettis, who had been looking good out of the pen, gave up five runs while recording just one out.

The other obvious positive was the offense. Charlie Blackmon remained red hot at the dish going 3-for-6 with an RBI. Michael Cuddyer went 3-for-5 with an RBI and grabbed the lead in the race for the batting title by raising his average to .334. Todd Helton, in his final Coors Field home day game went out with a bang, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs as he once again was greeted at the plate with a standing ovation for every at-bat.  Nolan Arendao and Yorvit Torrealba also joined the hit parade by each collecting two hits. In the end the offense wasn't enough and the Rockies pitched way to poorly to deserve a win.

The Rockies have just five games remaining in what has been another disappointing year. They are off tomorrow before starting a mini two game series with the AL East Champion Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
