Charlie Blackmon got the offense started early, leading off the bottom of the first with his sixth home run of the season against Boston starter John Lackey. The Rockies extended the lead later in the inning when Michael Cuddyer, who had doubled, scored on a single from Todd Helton to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead after an inning of play.
Troy Tulowitzki extended the lead with a solo home run to straight-away center field in the third inning and Corey Dickerson followed suit with a solo shot to right in the fourth to give the home team a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Tyler Chatwood was mowing down the formidable Boston lineup, allowing just two hits, both singles, and no runs in his first six innings. He did allow an unearned run in the seventh thanks to his own throwing error on a ground ball from Jackie Bradley Jr. that allowed Will Middlebrooks to score, cutting the Rockies' lead to 4-1. Chatwood allowed just the one unearned run on three hits in seven innings of work with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.
The Rockies responded in the bottom of the seventh with a barrage of hits against three Boston relievers. They scored four runs on four hits in the inning, the big blows coming via a bases loaded single from DJ LeMahieu that scored Jordan Pacheco and Josh Rutledge and a two-run single by Cuddyer that plated Blackmon and LeMahieu, giving Colorado an 8-1 lead.
The series, and Helton's Coors Field career, closes tomorrow night with Jhoulys Chacin on the mound for the Rockies against Boston's Jake Peavy.
