Rockies left-handed pitching prospect Jayson Aquino left the team's intrasquad game on Thursday after being hit in the head with a batted ball.
Aquino was pulled from the game and taken to a Scottsdale-area hospital after a line drive off the bat of minor-league infielder Rafael Ynoa hit him squarely the left side of his face. Aquino was initially thought to have only been grazed by the ball, but Rockies manager Walt Weiss told MLB.com's Thomas Harding after the game that the impact was a bit more serious than that.
The 21-year-old Dominican was able to stand up and leave the field on his own power, but the Rockies chose to have him undergo further evaluation. Aquino went 0-10 with a 4.34 ERA while striking out 7.6 batters per nine innings and walking 2.7 in his full-season stateside debut. Despite the relatively poor season, Aquino has not fallen off much as a prospect because he's a southpaw who is considered to have plus command.
