Rockies announce 24 non-roster spring training invitees

A pair of top prospects headline Colorado's list of NRIs.

USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rockies on Tuesday announced a list of 24 non-roster players who will receive invitations to spring training. The list includes the team's top two prospects as well as several intriguing depth options.

Starting pitchers Jonathan Gray and Eddie Butler are the two most notable players of the 24. Gray, the Rockies' first-round pick in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft, was dominant in his pro debut, posting a 1.93 ERA with 51 strikeouts and eight walks in 37⅓ innings at rookie-level Grand Junction and High-A Modesto. Butler was even more impressive in his first full season as a professional, finishing with a 1.80 ERA while striking out 143 batters in 149⅔ innings during an almost-unprecedented (for the Rockies organization, at least) ascent that sent him from Low-A Asheville to Double-A Tulsa.

Catcher Michael McKenry and infielder Paul Janish are among several minor-league free-agent signings that will report to camp. Those two probably have the best shot among anyone on the list of cracking the Rockies' Opening Day roster.
