Rockies 4, Angels 4: Colorado ties for second straight game

The Rockies tied for the second straight spring training game today on the strength of a 9th inning Drew Stubbs double. Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Rockies while Stubbs and Corey Dickerson both had two hits.

For the second straight game the Rockies neither won nor lost. This time it was a dramatic two-out 9th inning double by Drew Stubbs that deadlocked the score. Both teams had runners on first and second with no outs in the tenth, but in both cases a double play ended the scoring threat - and so nobody went home with a win.

Juan Nicasio's small sample size spring scoreless streak stopped suddenly with a solo shot in the second inning by Howie Kendrick. Nicasio evaded trouble after that until the fifth inning, when he was victimized twice more by the long ball, including a two run shot by all-everything OF Mike Trout. In all, Nicasio went 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on those three homers (six hits total), striking out four in the process. Nicasio also helped his own cause with a RBI single in the 4th inning.

Fortunately for Nicasio, his bullpen was once again effective, as five relievers combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Manny Corpas allowed two hits in relief of Nicasio but managed to strike out two to get out of the 5th inning. Adam Ottavino pitched two clean innings (5 groundballs and a strikeout), while Rule 5 draftee Tommy Kahnle and Greg Burke both added 1-2-3 frames of their own. Yohan Flande came into the game in the 10th, and after allowing two singles to start the inning, he shut the door on the Angels.

Carlos Gonzalez (hitting .318 this spring) had his first spring homer, a two run shot in the first inning:

Corey Dickerson and Stubbs both had two hit games for the Rockies, who had 12 hits in the game. Notably not among those with hits in the game was Justin Morneau, who is hitting just .154 this spring (SSS alert!).
