Rockies 9, Diamondbacks 4: No Tulo, no problem

Nolan Arenado homered twice and Michael Cuddyer did so once to lead the Rockies to a 9-4 win over Arizona.

On a night in which Troy Tulowitzki was rested, the rest of the offense picked up the slack after a slow start en route to a 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

The Rockies got off to a slow start quite literally as Jorge De La Rosa took 42 pitches and nearly a half hour to get out of the top of the first, despite only allowing one run. The bats also started cold for Colorado. After Charlie Blackmon's leadoff single, his seventh hit in as many at bats at Coors Field this season, Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy retired 10 straight Rockies hitters.

McCarthy's hot start allowed the Diamondbacks to jump out to an early 4-0 lead after three innings, with the big blow coming in the third inning via a Mark Trumbo two-run home run.

Colorado finally broke through against McCarthy in the bottom of the fourth. After Carlos Gonzalez worked a one-out walk, Michael Cuddyer hit his second home run of the season, an opposite field shot, to cut the Arizona lead in half. After a Justin Morneau ground out, Nolan Arenado hit his first home run of the season to cut the lead to 4-3.

The Rockies took the lead in the fifth when DJ LeMahieu singled home Blackmon and then scored from first on Gonzalez's single. Yes, LeMahieu scored from first on a single.

With the Rockies now in the lead, it was up to the bullpen to hold down the fort, which it did. Tommy Kahnle, Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers and LaTroy Hawkins combined to pitch 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

Of course, the Rockies offense did pad its lead in the later innings with Arenado's second homer of the game in the sixth, a sacrifice fly from LeMahieu in the seventh and back-to-back-to-back doubles from Morneau, Arenado and Jordan Pacheco in the eighth.

The Rockies look for the sweep tomorrow as Brett Anderson takes on Wade Miley at 2:10 pm M.T.
