Game Preview: Bats need to get going in Philly

Jhoulys Chacin will try to lift the Rockies in this series opening game in Philadelphia

Scott Cunningham

Happy Memorial Day everyone. Hopefully you are all enjoying a warm summery day away from the office, a glass of iced tea handy and a burger or two on the grill. I've always felt that Memorial Day is an underrated holiday; late May is probably the most beautiful time of year, and no matter your religion or creed you can take a moment to appreciate the service of our men and women in the armed forces. It's these guys who keep our freedom secure and allow us to watch a baseball game in the afternoon.

Jhoulys Chacin has been doing yeoman's work ever since rejoining the Rockies rotation. His velocity has been down a notch and his pitches not quite as sharp as they were during his excellent 2013. That's reflected in his numbers, as he sports a 4.76 ERA and 36.8% ground ball rate. The Rockies have not won any of his four starts.

The Phillies are going to trot out the reliable Kyle Kendrick, a steady if unheralded member of the Philadelphia rotation. He's a crafty right hander without any wipe-out pitches and makes his living by inducing ground balls. Sort of like Chacin. Kendrick is 0-5 this year with a 4.53 ERA, so he hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire. If the Rockies want to turn this road trip around, winning this game would be a good place to start.

Troy Tulowitzki is apparently not hurt. He got pulled from yesterday's game, which is always a cause for a massive panic attack, but it must not have been a big deal. Yesterday's game was crap anyway.

Josh Rutledge is getting his first start since his recall from Triple-A, at second base. Walt Weiss might be looking to get more offense into the lineup. Rutledge has a better chance of knocking one over the short fences in Citizen's Bank Park. After getting muzzled in Atlanta, going with the offense-heavy lineup is understandable. Although I would probably prefer DJ LeMahieu at third than Charlie Culberson.
