I'm pretty sick of writing about the Diamondbacks. We're entering the fourth series between the NL West's cellar dwellers and the struggling Rockies, so there's not a lot we don't already know about Arizona. So, for in-depth reading on the D-Backs, you are cordially invited to check out AZ Snakepit. They do the best job of anyone ever when it comes to covering Phoenix's baseball club.
I do have a few nuggets on the 23-36 D-Backs:
- Few teams in baseball have been hit harder by the injury bug than Arizona. Patrick Corbin, the team's ace last year, is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, as is impact reliever David Hernandez. Former Rockie Matt Reynolds had the same surgery last September and is still out indefinitely. Top prospect Archie Bradley was initially feared to have a similar injury, but he has recently resumed throwing and could be back in action sometime in the next week or two. Mark Trumbo wasn't great in the early going, but he was leading the league in home runs when he went down with a fractured left foot. And now, A.J. Pollock, who leads the team with a 150 OPS+, had his hand broken by a Johnny Cueto pitch on Saturday and will be out for quite a while.
- This is not a great offense -- especially in 2014 -- but as we've seen a million times in the past, it's one that hits really well against the Rockies. Take Miguel Montero, for instance. Even in 2013, when he experienced a career-worst season, the veteran catcher hit .273/.355/.400 against Colorado. Not great numbers on the surface, but the tOPS+ of 128 means he's 28 percent better than his normal production when facing Rockies pitching. Aaron Hill (160 tOPS+), Gerardo Parra (132 tOPS+), and to lesser degrees, Paul Goldschmidt (109 tOPS+) and Martin Prado (108 tOPS+) fall into this category, as well.
- As mediocre as Arizona's offense has been this season (90 OPS+), the pitching has been much worse. The staff has a collective ERA+ of 84, and of the nine pitchers to start a game for the D-Backs in 2014, only one -- Josh Collmenter (112) -- has an ERA+ of 100 or better.
