Saturday Rockpile: Eddie Butler's rough debut, more

While all of us wanted a complete game no-hitter in Eddie Butler's first start for the Rockies, the truth of it was that he was facing a ball club with a $235 million roster on a gorgeous night at Coors Field.

While all of us wanted a no-hitter in Eddie Butler's first start for the Rockies, the truth of it was that he was facing a ball club with a $235 million roster on a gorgeous night at Coors Field.  I look forward to Butler having a long career and we will all, hopefully, look back at his first start and laugh about how he struck out Yasiel Puig twice and forget the final score.  Some writers out there aren't that sure though.

Eddie Butler didn't do it in debut, leaving Rox in gray area - Benjamin Hochman

To give Hochman credit, he backs off what his title says and doesn't exactly call for Gray to replace Butler.  However, he puts way to much judgement into this one start, using phrases like coffee-cup sipper.  He also stated that Gray's second pitch is praying while most Rox fans will know that it is actually a third pitch that Gray is trying to pick up to make him a major league starter.  He also forgets that the Rockies would have won the two previous games if the staff held the D-Backs to as few runs as they did against the Dodgers Friday night.

Rest becomes best remedy for ailing Rockies reliever Boone Logan - Patrick Saunders

Boone admits his left elbow has been hurting for a year and a half.  Makes me a little concerned why the Rockies would hand him a three-year contract if that were the case.  Here is to hoping that a little rest will get him back to pitching well.

Justin Morneau: Back from the Brink - Jerry Crasnick

It is good to see the team get some national attention even while in the midst of a losing streak.  Of course this article sparked all sorts of stupid comments from naysayers talking about Coors Field being the real reason for Morneau's revival.

Kyle Parker pulls off leap to triple-A in Rockies system - Irv Moss

Good article about Parker, except there was no talk about first base as Moss talked about the barrier to the majors for Kyle was the six outfielders already with the big league club.

Third rounder starts Rox's run on college draftees - Thomas Harding

Great read by Harding that will give you a little information about each pick the Rockies made on day two of the draft, including another local player who has already had Walt Weiss as his manager.
