It's hard to believe that just two years ago I was sitting in the stands with Eddie Butler as he was telling me how he was going to try and make the Rockies team in 2014. I told him no, if you're lucky you might be in Modesto in 2014. Boy was I wrong! Last night I witnessed him struggle, but also reveled as he struck out Yasiel Puig twice, both times with runners in scoring position.
The redhead was charting pitches for the recently promoted Jayson Aquino when; he looked up from his book and told me he would play for Modesto in 2013 and then in Tulsa in 2014 with a chance for a late-season call up later that year. He wasn't being cocky either and admitted that he was at the whim of the Rockies front office, but those were his goals and he planned on doing his best to make them happen.
He went on to describe how he was familiar with Asheville and the hitters park it was known for. He also shared with me how he wasn't afraid of pitching in some of the hitters parks in the CAL league and would push to start there.
Things didn't work out exactly as he planned. The Rockies started him in Asheville, where he simply dominated the Low-A hitters with a 1.66 ERA. Modesto turned out to be a short rest stop on his journey to the big leagues, as he finished the season in Double-A Tulsa with a 0.65 ERA.
I've had the privilege of interviewing the Radford alum several times over the years. The first time, shortly after he was drafted while playing for Grand Junction. Eddie has always been a class act and surprised me with his growth and maturity throughout his time in the minor leagues. Last night was a bump in the road for the right-hander and I'm confident he will blossom into a major league pitcher.
Another pitcher making his case for a promotion
After the team experienced a relief corps that's completely imploded during their recent losing streak, the next Rockies pitcher called up might not be Jon Gray or Tyler Matzek, but Scott Oberg. The right-handed reliever has gained some traction lately and recently completed his 14th save, out of 14 opportunities for the Tulsa Drillers.
Drafted out of the University of Connecticut in the 15th round of the same year which produced Eddie Butler. Oberg has been impressive of late sporting a six appearance scoreless streak.
Pitching out of the bullpen in Double-A Tulsa, Oberg throws a sinking 94 mph fastball with a power curveball. The 6-foot-2 pitcher induces groundballs at a decent rate while maintaining a 2.96 ERA for the Drillers. Last season, Oberg was even more dominant in High-A Modesto, with a 1.86 ERA and a high strikeout profile.
If the current group of relievers can't rally to perform better, the front office has another pitcher in Tulsa waiting to take someone's place.

Hottest Prospect videos of the Week
Redemption for Tyler Matzek as he strikes out his ninth batter in a bounce-back game for the left-hander.
I need to rename this section: The Kyle Parker highlights of the week, as the right-handed batter doubles down the line.
Cristhian Adames notches his third triple of the season.
Raimel Tapia notches a 2-RBI double that scores David Dahl in this Charleston Riverdogs highlight video.
Raimel Tapia steals home on a botched pickoff play. Also included is a Correlle Prime RBI double which scores David Dahl (notice a theme here?).
Hector Villarroel throws out the first pitch as the opening day starter for the DSL Rockies. He has a 0.00 ERA through two starts.
