Game Preview: Matzek takes on Kennedy

At least Matzek is worth watching

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

It can be hard to forget that the Rockies have turned into a raging dumpster fire. When all the chatter about the team is about which beloved players are about to get shipped off, it's easy to slip into cynicism. And when Yohan Flande or Christian Friedrich or whatever Quad-A player is starting, that sadness is pretty inescapable. But Tyler Matzek is a reason to watch.

He's a first round pick. He's just 23. He pours 94 mph fastballs over the plate. His minor league walk issues haven't shown up yet in the majors. He could--if you squint--be a piece in a solid rotation. He's worth watching.

Matzek's ERA is a perfectly respectable 4.25 and he has 18 strikeouts against just 8 walks. Three out of his five starts this year have been pretty good. And against a light hitting Padres lineup, there's a solid chance he twirls a gem, mitigating some of the agony of rooting for the Rockies.

We haven't seen the Padres in a while, and...whoa. Someone named Tommy Medica is hitting cleanup? Alright...I guess the Rockies aren't the only ones going through lean times. The Padres are the first losing team the Rockies have faced in quite some time, so maybe a course correction could happen this series. It's about time. Because really, this has been awful.

Ian Kennedy gets the ball for the Friars. He has a very solid 3.56 ERA at Coors Field in seven starts, so you can't just hope he'll turn into a pumpkin at altitude. The Rockies will counter with basically their A lineup, though Wilin Rosario is out in favor of Mike McKenry. Frankly, McKenry might be a better option anyway, as Wilin is showing less and less aptitude for the game.
