Game Wrap: Rockies 7, Reds 3

Doug Pensinger

A game that started like all too many, with the opponent taking an early lead, ended in a way not seen very often for the Colorado Rockies this year.  The team's offense kept pushing runs across the plate to stake Jorge De La Rosa to a 7-2 lead by the end of the fifth inning and Jorge and the bullpen kept the lead with Jorge giving the Red's just one more run in the sixth.

Seven inning outings ahve not been the norm for Colorado of late and Jorge showed again that he does well at Coors Field.  A lead off walk got him into trouble in the second as he seemed to let that bother him through the next couple of batters.  That walk ended up scoring plus one more run in the inning, but then he got out 11 of the next 14 batters he faced before Ryan Ludwick homered off him in the seventh.  Jorge even persevered that, though, and finished with a seven inning performance.

Boone Logan was able to get both a righty and lefty out and then Adam Ottavino was brought in and struck out Todd Frazier to end the eighth.  In the ninth, LaTroy Hawkins gave up a hit after getting a ground out but then enticed Skip Shumaker to ground into a double play.

The Rockies used two doubles to score a run in the second, a sacrifice fly to score a run in the third, and a ground out followed by a single that each scored a run in the fourth before Charlie Culberson hit a three run home run in the fifth.  That is called having effective outs and providing relentless pressure on the opponent's pitcher.  Great job by the offense tonight with Drew Stubbs, Wilin Rosario, and Charlie Culberson each having multi-hit games.

A good way to start a homestand and a way to great the out-of-town Reds! Now the team needs to keep playing like this.
