Friday Pebble Report: Jon Gray pitches well in Drillers loss

Rockies affiliates had two pitchers toss complete games and three clubs lose one-run affairs in a mixed day results-wise.

Rob Tringali

AAA - Sacramento River Cats 5, Colorado Springs Sky Sox 4 (12 innings)
Home runs from Tim Wheeler and Matt McBride were not enough as the Sky Sox dropped a 5-4 decision in 12 innings in Sacramento. An RBI single from Kyle Blanks against Rob Scahill in the bottom of the ninth tied the game at four before Alden Carrithers drove in the game winner in the bottom of the 12th against Mike McClendon to give the River Cats the win.

AA - Midland RockHounds 3, Tulsa Drillers 2
Jon Gray (No. 1 PuRP) was solid, if unspectacular in the Drillers' 3-2 loss to Midland. Gray allowed a run on five hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking three and striking out four. He threw 94 pitches, 57 for strikes. Delta Cleary Jr.'s two-run double in the eighth provided the only Drillers' runs of the night and tied the game at two before Midland's D'Arby Myers hit a solo home run in the ninth to win it.

High-A - Modesto Nuts 6, Bakersfield Blaze 4
The Nuts were able to overcome a four-run first from Bakersfield en route to a 6-4 win. Jayson Aquino (No. 21 PuRP) pitched a complete game, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts. Modesto scored four runs of their own in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead and Jordan Ribera hit a solo home run for an insurance run in the eighth.

A - Asheville Tourists 8, Augusta GreenJackets 2
A pair of doubles and a home run from Correlle Prime (No. 23 PuRP) led the Tourists to an 8-2 win at home against Augusta. Alex Balog (No. 18 PuRP) bolstered the offensive effort with a strong performance of his own, allowing a run on five hits in five innings while striking out four.

Short-Season A - Spokane Indians 3, Tri-City Dust Devils 2
The Dust Devils bullpen gave up runs in the eighth and ninth innings as they lost, 3-2, to Spokane. Blake Shouse allowed just a run on three hits in his five innings of work and Sam Moll (No. 24 PuRP) pitched two innings of scoreless relief, but the Tri-City offense produced just two runs on four hits in the loss.

Rookie - Billings Mustangs 7, Grand Junction Rockies 2
Grand Junction Rockies 8, Billings Mustangs 3
The Rockies and Mustangs split a doubleheader in Grand Junction. The Mustangs tagged Sam Howard for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings in the opener and cruised to an easy 7-2 win. However, the Rockies bounced back in the nightcap with an offensive barrage of their own, scoring three in the second and four in the sixth, highlighted by the second home run of the season for Forrest Wall (No. 12 PuRP) en route to an 8-3 victory.

DSL - DSL Rockies 7, DSL Cardinals 0
Jorge Oviedo pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven as the Rockies blanked the Cardinals, 7-0. Center fielder Manuel Melendez had a pair of hits and drove in three to spearhead an offensive effort that saw the Rockies produce 14 hits, 13 of them singles.
