The Rockies suddenly remembered last night that they were supposed to lose on the road in San Francisco...
Giants' Madison Bumgarner tosses one-hitter at Rockies - The Denver Post
The Rockies nearly had a no-hitter/perfect game against them last night for the second time against a NL West rival on the road this year (no, Clayton Kershaw wasn't perfect, but that sure was a great game he pitched). This time, Justin Morneau was the lone Rockies player to reach base - on a double in the eighth inning. Madison Bumgarner, who was winless this year against the Rockies, struck out 13 men and completed his one-hitter in 103 pitches. His 98 game score was the second best performance in MLB this year (and was one of the best performances ever) next to Kershaw's imperfect perfect game against the Rockies back in June. But enough about the Giants already.
De La Rosa's start ends with thumb injury | Rockies.com: News
Alex Espinosa and Cody Ulm have notes on Jorge De La Rosa's thumb injury that caused him to leave the game after serving up a two run homer to Buster Posey. Per Jorge, the injury was sustained when batting in the previous inning. Here's what he had to say about the injury:
"My thumb was really, really numb," De La Rosa said. "I don't like to make excuses, but you can't pitch with that thing."
De La Rosa has pitched, and pitched very well, with a thumb injury before, but the numbness was new to him. In the training staff debate, I'd chalk this one up to De La Rosa not revealing his injury. De La Rosa is the only Rockies starter who hasn't missed a start this year, and he vows to make his next one. We'll see - 2014 has led to a more cynical version of me.
Ailing wrist could land Rosario on disabled list | Rockies.com: News
In other injury news, the crowded Colorado disabled list could be adding another member in the near future - that of Wilin Rosario. Rosario has been out of the lineup with a left wrist injury since last Friday. Walt Weiss had this to say about the injury before last night's game:
"He's been getting treatment and trying to swing the bat in the cage the past couple days," Weiss said. "But he's getting close to probably looking at a DL [stint] is what we're looking at. The wrist just isn't responding like we want."
This might mean Matt McBride behind the plate or a call-up of Jackson Williams from AAA to fill in for Rosario.
Rockies shining at getting double plays | Rockies.com: News
And now for some semi-positive news...going into last night's game, the Rockies had turned 138 double plays this year - best in MLB. Of course, a big pre-requisite of a double play is that a runner has to be on base, an all-too frequent occurrence for Rockies pitchers this year.
Story among four Rox prospects going to AFL | Rockies.com: News
It's almost Arizona Fall League season - the time of year in which MLB teams send some of their promising upper minors talent to face off against each other in front of talent evaluators and prospect hounds every September. The Rockies assigned four position players to the AFL: shortstop Trevor Story (PuRP 4), second baseman Taylor Featherston (PuRP 26), catcher Ryan Casteel (PuRP 15), and catcher Chris O'Dowd. All four are currently members of the playoff-bound AA Tulsa Drillers.
The Rockies will also be sending some pitchers to the AFL, but those decisions have not been announced as of yet. Pitchers who could be on the roster include AA pitchers Jon Gray (PuRP 1), Eddie Butler (PuRP 3), and Tyler Anderson (PuRP 11).
Baseball Prospectus | The Lineup Card: Seven September Call Ups We're Excited to See
No Rockies make this list (unsurprisingly), but I'll have some more about the potential September call-ups for Colorado later this morning.
