After scoring three runs to win the opener of this four game series against the Giants, the Colorado Rockies only managed to score three runs in the next three games. Averaging one run a game is not a recipe for success and the Giants cashed in on Colorado's inability to hit the ball.
In this final game of the series, it was the Rockies' pitcher, Jordan Lyles, who got the first hit for Colorado. This was one batter after the Giant's Yusmeiro Petit set the MLB record for consecutive batters retired. His double, followed by a Charlie Blackmon single, were two of the four hits for Colorado and provided the lone run. Helping with his bat, Jordan also tried to keep his team in it with hit arm too. He pitched six effect, if not strong, innings giving up three runs, four hits, and three walks while striking out five. His biggest mistake was the two run homerun he gave up to Gregor Blanco in the second.
Overall, the Rockies had only 16 hits in this four game series and this four hit, one run effort today was pretty much the series average. This is mainly due to the Rockies only having two bonafide big league hitters in their lineup (Morneau and Dickerson) with two on the cusp hitters (Blackmon and Arenado) to provide assistance. The other four hitters provided only one hit in this game and a total of six for the series. Not a good way to try and win a game.
Matt Belisle pitched a clean seventh inning, while Juan Nicasio gave up an additional run to drive the score to 4-1. Pitching averaging giving up three runs a game should make Colorado successful and if this was a healthy Rockies' team, I would think that they would have easily won a few of these games.
