Merry Christmas! Wherever and however you celebrate the holiday season, we at Purple Row hope you have a wonderful time this week, and a great New Year in 2016. As you most likely sit around the house with family eating way too much food later today, here are a few links and pieces of news to enjoy around the Colorado Rockies and Major League Baseball.
Deck the calls: Rockies — MLB.com
Isn't this the perfect backdrop to the holiday season? The greatest gift any of us could get, of course, is a few more of these calls in the near future — especially, ya know, if they have playoff implications. Oh, well. All good things will come in time, and the meek shall inherit the earth. Or something.
Death of former Rockies president Keli McGregor still stings father — Denver Post
Here's a nice piece from the Denver Post's Irv Moss about Brian McGregor, the father of late Rockies team president Keli McGregor. Obviously, the Rockies' trajectory changed when the younger McGregor died unexpectedly, but far more significant is how the sudden death affected Keli's family.
Giants reportedly still exploring trade for Rockies outfielder — McCovey Chronicles
While we are busy speculating on potential St. Louis Cardinals prospects that could attract the Rockies' attention this week, the San Francisco Giants are still in the conversation for a Rox outfielder, maybe Charlie Blackmon or Corey Dickerson. Maybe.
JAWS and Hall of Fame ballot: Picking final 10 for election — Sports Illustrated
Sports Illustrated's Jay Jaffe goes in deep picking a Hall of Fame ballot using JAWS, and he comes up with many candidates deserving of the Hall, but he settles on 10 that would be on his ballot if he had one right now: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey Jr., Jeff Bagwell, Mike Piazza, Alan Trammell, Mike Mussina, Curt Schilling, Tim Raines, and Edgar Martinez. That means he would leave Larry Walker off, but only because his vote would be limited to 10. We'll see how Walker's candidacy plays out amongst the BBWAA very soon.
Colorado Rockies: Projecting starting rotation for 2016 — Mile High Maniac
Matthew Schoettler hypothesizes about some of the Rockies' potential starting rotation options ahead of Opening Day. Assuming the Rockies make no other significant moves this winter (which might not be a safe assumption), what do you think the rotation will look like the first week of April? My picks: Jorge de la Rosa, Chad Bettis, Jon Gray, Jordan Lyles, and Tyler Chatwood, with Chris Rusin on the outside looking in.
Rubbing Mud: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Charlie? — Baseball Prospectus
Matthew Trueblood marvels at Charlie Blackmon's new approach at the plate, and examines what it means to be that patient and passive. Some good baseball analysis and talk from BP in a relatively light content week with the holidays.
