The Colorado Rockies on Tuesday announced their non-roster invitees for 2015 spring training, which begins on Feb. 19 at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz. The list is headlined by No. 1 PuRP and 2013 first-round pick Jon Gray, as well as a pair of other top 15 organizational prospects.
Gray, 23, is entering his third professional season and will be in the mix for a spot in the Rockies' rotation as an NRI for the second straight year, according to general manager Jeff Bridich. The Oklahoma product posted a 3.91 ERA with 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings while pitching with training wheels on in 2014. Gray was utterly dominant the year he was drafted, holding opponents to just eight earned runs while striking out 51 batters in 37⅓ innings across two stops.
Trevor Story, the No. 8 PuRP, receives his first spring training invitation four years after being selected by the Rockies in the first round out of high school. Story, 22, hit .263/.367/.475 in a strong bounce-back season that culminated in Double-A. The Irving, Texas native career .258/.347/.454 line in parts of four minor league seasons.
No. 12 PuRP Tom Murphy is back with the big league club in spring training for the second consecutive season. Murphy impressed Rockies brass in Scottsdale last year and was thought to have moved significantly up the organization's catching ladder before suffering a shoulder injury early in the season that would eventually sideline him for the final three months of the season. Prior to the injury, Murphy was hitting .213/.321/.415 in Double-A.
