The Colorado Rockies were handed their first loss of the season last evening, with Kyle Kendrick getting shelled for eight earned runs in just five innings of work. Jordan Lyles takes the mound today and will face Kyle Hendricks.
Hendricks' last outing against the Rockies was a good one; he held the Rockies to just one run over eight innings. Lyles, however, is 2-1 while facing the Cubs and owns a record of 5-1 at Coors Field. He'll look to continue his strong run of performances at home. Michael McKenry and Daniel Descalso get their first starts of the season, as Walt Weiss has elected to give Troy Tulowitzki and Nick Hundley the day off.
Both pitchers are hitting eighth again, and the Cubs are rolling with their core group of stars. Let's hope in the battle of leadoff men, ours comes through today. Dexter Fowler was a headache for the Rockies yesterday, recording two triples and two walks in five trips to the plate.
In other news, John Axford has been placed on the family emergency list, with Scott Oberg his temporary replacement. Axford will be out for up to a week, so Oberg could very well get his chance to see some time. Wishing the best of luck to the Axford family as they get some time to spend with each other after a scary and crazy injury to his son.
