The Colorado Rockies will face a stern test to keep their undefeated road record intact tonight as they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers and ace Clayton Kershaw.
Kershaw won his second-straight Cy Young Award, and third in four years, last season as he posted a 1.77 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 1.81 FIP to go with a 21-3 record and 239 strikeouts. He has struggled to start this season, however, with a 5.84 ERA in two starts.
Against the southpaw, Rockies manager Walt Weiss has elected to sit lefties Carlos Gonzalez and Justin Morneau, with Charlie Blackmon moving to Gonzalez's spot in right field, Drew Stubbs playing center field and Wilin Rosario playing first base and batting cleanup.
Kershaw is just the second lefty the Rockies are facing this season and, as he did against Travis Wood a week ago, Weiss is batting the pitcher eighth and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki second.
On the mound for the Rockies is right-hander Kyle Kendrick. Kendrick's first two starts for the Rockies have been a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as he threw seven shutout innings in Milwaukee to open the season before allowing eight runs in five innings against the Cubs at Coors Field his second time out.
Kendrick will face a Dodgers lineup that does not include right fielder Yasiel Puig, who is nursing a sore hamstring. Andre Ethier will take Puig's place in right field and bat sixth. Yasmani Grandal is behind the plate for Los Angeles tonight, not A.J. Ellis.
