The Colorado Rockies showed some heart tonight as they battled the San Diego Padres down to the wire, escaping with a 5-4 walk off victory. Daniel Descalso pinch hit in the ninth with the bases loaded, and he drove a line drive over Justin Upton's head, letting Nolan Arenado jog home. The victory prevented the Padres taking three straight and brought the Rockies back over .500.
Corey Dickerson and Nolan Arenado were back in the lineup after both sitting last night with various ailments, and their return demonstrated their value. Dickerson crushed two solo home runs, both of which tied the game: a first inning shot and an eighth inning bomb that brought the team back from the dead. It felt like another game slipping through the fingers as Kyle Kendrick gave up a 3-2 lead in the seventh, but Dickerson brought it back. Arenado, meanwhile, put on a clinic at third base all night, while going two for four at the plate with two runs scored.
If you offered me a Kyle Kendrick outing of seven innings and four runs allowed, I'd take it every time. He gave the bullpen a much needed rest. Speaking of bullpen, John Axford's return went perfectly and Adam Ottavino continues to dominate. Both kept the game tied.
The Rockies will try to split the series tomorrow in an afternoon game.
