Rockies LHP Tyler Matzek takes surprisingly low ERA into start vs. Diamondbacks

Matzek has become a master at getting out of trouble, something that bodes well for him as he continues to navigate through delivery and command issues.

Colorado Rockies left-hander Tyler Matzek isn't exactly lighting the world on fire with his strikeout-to-walk ratio, but for a guy still trying to find consistency with his delivery and command of his well-above-average stuff, he'll take it.

Matzek enters his start on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks (7:40 p.m. MT, ROOT Sports) with a 2.40 ERA in three starts despite walking as many batters -- 10 -- as he's struck out. He's become a master at weaving his way in and out of traffic. That bodes very well for Matzek, according to Rockies manager Walt Weiss.

"It's huge for his future," Weiss said on Sunday before the Rockies' series finale against the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field was rained out. "Tyler's been able to make the right pitches in the right situations to get outs when he needs them."

Matzek made two starts against the Diamondbacks last year that largely mirror his performance so far this season. In 12 innings, Matzek allowed only seven hits but walked eight batters and struck out only six. He got the help of a couple of double play grounders and limited the D-backs to a .176 average on balls in play. Matzek surrendered only three runs as a result.
