Colorado Rockies get the victory behind Morneau's home run, win 5-4

The Rockies continued to have success on the road as they beat the Diamondbacks on Monday night.

The Rockies got the win on Monday night after a solid pitching performance from Tyler Matzek and a three-run homer from Justin Morneau.

The Rockies quickly got the offense going in the first inning. Corey Dickerson singled and Troy Tulowitzki followed with a 13 pitch walk to set the table for Justin Morneau. Morneau crushed a 91 mph fastball over the right field wall to put the Rockies ahead 3-0.

Corey Dickerson would add on to that lead in the second with an RBI single, scoring Tyler Matzek.

Tyler Matzek pitched five strong innings, walking three and striking out three. Matzek limited the Diamondbacks to just two runs on an RBI groundout and an RBI infield single. Both runs came in the fifth inning. Matzek would have gone at least six innings, but was pulled after one pitch in the sixth due to an apparent hamstring injury. Unfortunately, the bullpen would now have to eat up at least four innings. Brooks Brown would then come on in relief.

The Rockies would pad their lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Nolan Arenado, but that was quickly answered by the Diamondbacks on an RBI groundout from Tuffy Gosewisch.

Things got a little weird in the bottom of the eighth. With Rafael Betancourt pitching and a runner on third with two outs, Tuffy Gosewisch hit a groundball to shortstop that slipped right under the glove of Troy Tulowitzki and rolled into the outfield. Not something you usually see from the Gold Glove shortstop. That miscue allowed a run to score, pulling the Diamondbacks to within one run in the eighth. Betancourt would strike out the following batter to end the inning.

Shortly before today’s game, it was announced that Rockies’ closer Adam Ottavino was placed on the 15-day disabled list. This would set up John Axford to get the final three outs.

The ninth inning was a nail biter. Axford would allow the tying run to reach third and the go-ahead run to reach first with two outs, but was able to get Mark Trumbo to ground out to end the game.

The Rockies improve to 7-3 on the road and 11-8 overall. The Diamondbacks drop to 8-11.
