San Diego Padres 14, Colorado Rockies 3: Rockies blown out in San Diego

Things went just about as badly as they could have in every facet of the game for the Rockies as they lost by eleven runs.

Last night, I saw a late showing of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was much more entertaining than what I watched tonight. However, the titular villain, a robot, perfectly described tonight's 14-3 loss to the Padres.

I can't physically throw up in my mouth, but if I could, I would do it.

The Rockies failed in essentially every aspect of baseball in the loss, as they were hurt by poor roster construction, poor in-game management, poor play and poor luck.

Rockies starting pitcher Eddie Butler started the game by walking the leadoff hitter and things really did not get much better from there. Butler lasted four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits with two walks, a hit batter and three strikeouts.

What really hurt Butler was the four-run fourth inning that saw the Rockies commit three errors, one by Butler, one by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and one by second baseman DJ LeMahieu. It is debatable whether Tulowitzki's error should have gone down as such, as the umpiring crew missed a rather blatant case of interference by runner Yonder Alonso.

The Rockies finally got on the board in the fifth on a home run from, of all people, Drew Stubbs, who was pressed into action because of a stomach bug that ailed Charlie Blackmon. It was Stubbs' first hit of the season after starting 0-for-21. Stubbs' homer cut the San Diego lead to 5-1.

San Diego got the run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Nolan Arenado closed  the deficit  to 6-2 with his fourth home run of the season in the sixth.

The score remained 6-2 until the bottom of the eighth when the Rockies brought in Jorge Rondon to pitch. Rondon faced eight hitters, retired none, allowed five hits and two walks, and saw all of them come around to score. There was also a Padre to reach in the eighth on an error by Arenado.

The Rockies got a consolation run in the ninth to reach the 14-3 final.
