The Rockies lost to the Giants 10-8 in game one of what is turning out to be a traditional doubleheader. While the bats weren't silent by any means during the game, they were no match for the utter inability for Rockies pitching to prevent runs.
Jordan Lyles cruised through the Giants order the first time around. The only batter to reach base was leadoff hitter Gregor Blanco, and that was after a strikeout. In all, he allowed no hits and struck out four in the first ten batters he faced. The wheels came off in the third inning, when Lyles allowed three runs on five hits. He also got injured in the midst of it all, as he sprained his toe while completing his pitching motion. Keith Dugger made two trips to check on Lyles, but Lyles stayed in the game. He then came out for the fifth and allowed a single, a double, and hit a batter before being removed. Yohan Flande replaced him, and the hit parade continued. Flande allowed two hits, and the Giants put up four runs.
The Rockies hit three home runs—by Ben Paulsen, Nick Hundley, and Charlie Blackmon—and they scored six runs off of starter Chris Heston during his 5.2 innings pitched. The Rockies made it interesting by plating two runs in the ninth. Wilin Rosario represented the winning run at the plate, but he grounded out to third to end the game. When the opposition scores ten, wins are rare.
Stay tuned for a Game 2 thread.
