Game Preview: Kyle Kendrick vs. Madison Bumgarner

The Giants and Rockies square off in a rubber game this afternoon.

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

The Rockies are set to play the Giants this afternoon in San Francisco.

Kyle Kendrick gets the ball for the Rockies. Kendrick has been a presence for the Rockies in the most literal sense—he's there. His last outing more or less represented what we wanted from Kendrick: he gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings, but he gave the Rockies' offense a chance to win, and they did. Kendrick's current claim to infamy is that he's allowed the most home runs in baseball so far this year, 21. That's two more dingers allowed than fellow veteran Kyle, Lohse. Today will mark Kendrick's second start of the season against the Giants and the first in San Francisco. In his first outing against the Giants in May, Kendrick allowed four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings in what ended up a Rockies loss.

The Giants send left-hander Madison Bumgarner to the mound. Bumgarner enters with a 3.04 ERA and an ERA+ of 118. He's been on a bit of a roll as of late. In Bumgarner's last four starts, he has a 2.87 ERA in 31.1 innings, and he's struck out 41 while walking just five. The Rockies have had the good fortune of missing Bumgarner so far this season. Today will be Bumgarner's 21st start against the Rockies, and he's seen success over the course of the first 20: he has a 3.13 ERA in 126.1 innings.

Carlos Gonzalez is the lone lefty in the lineup today. Bumgarner is very tough on lefties. For his career, they have just a .207 batting average against him. In 44 plate appearances against Bumgarner, however, CarGo has 14 hits, including five homers and three doubles. He's also walked four times. Also of note, Kendrick is batting eighth today, while Rafael "Tough Out" Ynoa will hit ninth.
