Rockies Drop First Game of Series Against Marlins, 6-2

After a thrilling victory on Wednesday night, the Rockies came out flat on Friday against the Marlins, crossing the plate only twice in a 6-2 loss at seemingly perpetually rainy Coors Field.

Eddie Butler was not at his best tonight, laboring through 5 1/3 innings and giving up six runs, all of them earned. By contrast, Marlins starter Tom Koehler was terrific, allowing eight hits but only one run in seven innings of work.

Colorado managed to create a run in the sixth when Charlie Blackmon singled, stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on a single from the still-hot Troy Tulowitzki.

The Rockies couldn't seem to get anything substantial going all night against Koehler. The closest the home team got to a legitimate rally against him came late in the seventh, when a Ben Paulsen single, followed by a Brandon Barnes bloop and a Wilin Rosario infield dribbler loaded the bases with two outs, only to see Charlie Blackmon hit a weak ground ball to second to end the inning, after which the game entered a rain delay.

After nearly two hours, the game resumed in the eighth. Nolan Arenado hit his second sacrifice fly in as many games to plate Tulo for the Rockies' second run in the bottom of the inning against Vin Mazzaro, who was mysteriously left in to start the ninth, surrendering two hits to start the inning before being hurriedly relieved by Marlins closer A.J. Ramos who retired the next three batters to end the game.

The biggest highlight of the game came in the top of the third, when Giancarlo Stanton continued his Coors Field dominance by hitting a 478 foot solo home run to left center that measured as his longest of the year and the fourth longest in all of baseball in 2015.

Miami also got to Butler in the second, fifth and sixth innings.

The Rockies will attempt to right the ark ship tomorrow as Chris Rusin takes on David Phelps in a 2:10 game that will hopefully be too early to be delayed by weather.
