The Rockies get a walk off victory against the Braves

The Rockies have taken the first three games against the Braves.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The Rockies defeated the Braves 3-2 this afternoon.

The runs were scored the loud way—except for the last one. The Rockies got their run scoring going early. In the bottom of the first. Charlie Blackmon led off the game with a single. After starter Matt Wisler got Nolan Arenado and Troy Tulowitzki out, it looked like he was going to leave Blackmon on first. But then Carlos Gonzalez brought Blackmon—and himself—home with a two run homer to center field. In the second, Juan Uribe hit a solo home off of Jorge De La Rosa run to halve the lead. Then, in the third, Ryan Lavarnway tied the game with a solo dinger of his own. Those were the only two runs De La Rosa gave up. He threw six innings. He gave up four hits and two runs, and he walked two and struck out seven.

There was some drama, but little scoring, after Lavarnway's third inning home run.

Rex Brothers had a less than optimal return to the big leagues. Brothers entered in the seventh inning with the game tied at two. The first three pitches he threw to Andrelton Simmons, the first batter he faced, were balls. Brothers followed those up with a couple called strikes and then got Simmons to ground out. But then Brothers walked Lavarnway on four pitches and then Eury Perez on five. One of those balls was a wild pitch. In all Brothers threw 15 pitches and 11 of them were balls. It's very likely that Brothers will be sent back down to Albuquerque before long. Fortunately, Rafael Betancourt entered the game to record two consecutive outs, keeping the game tied.

The Rockies had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Charlie Blackmon hit a one out triple with Arenado, Tulowitzki, and Carlos Gonzalez due up. Braves' manager Fredi Gonzalez chose to intentionally walk Arenado to get to Tulo. The thought process, as best as I could tell, was to have reliever Arodys Vizcaino be responsible for getting just one right-handed batter out before turning it over to a lefty to face Gonzalez. Whatever the thought process, the result worked out for the Braves. Vizcaino struck out Tulo, and then Luis Avilan struck out CarGo.

The bottom of the ninth was adventurous. A Drew Stubbs single, a Blackmon HBP, and a Tulo walk loaded the bases for CarGo with one out. CarGo won the game for the Rockies with a bloop single that scored Stubbs. It wasn't one of those pretty walk offs that display baseball prowess, but it got the Rockies the win.

The Rockies will go for a four game sweep tomorrow afternoon.
