Class A Advanced: Modesto Nuts
W: Jones, C (4-0, 3.35) ; L: Balog (1-3, 3.82)
As the only active full season team in the system the Nuts stumbled a bit in this one. Starter Alex Balog allowed crooked numbers in three different innings on his way to allowing eight runs(seven earned) in 5.2 innings. The bright spot was Rosell Herrera who's four hit night raised his July line to .350/.409/.475 the former DSL bonus record holder may have lost his prospect sheen, but the talent that hit .343/.419/.515 for the 2013 Tourists is still in there.
Class A Short-Season: Boise Hawks
Everett 11, Boise 1
W: Pierce (2-0, 5.40) ; L: Thompson (0-2, 5.50)
David Dahl sans spleen continues to search for his stroke going 0-4 and has just one hit in his first 14AB since returning from the DL. The bright spot on a night where Boise struck out eight times without drawing a walk was once again Kevin Padlo who hit a triple to bring his northwest league line to .322/.408/.522, Padlo stumbled a bit in Asheville it is important to remember that even though this is his second pro season that Padlo is still the fifth youngest hitter in the NWL, and second youngest on the Hawks. The youngest hitter on the Hawks is big bonus DSL short stop Carlos Herrera who managed to steal his 21st base in his 34th game of the season.
Rookie: Grand Junction Rockies
W: Arias, Junior Joselin (1-0, 2.51) ; L: Zurat (1-2, 3.80) ; SV: Herget (3)
Mylz Jones first 50 professional at bats have gone perfectly, the 21 year old is hitting .400/.508/.480 with nine walks to just seven strikeouts. This Game was an excellent example of why I think the Rockies need to add an AZL level team, there just aren't enough plate appearances to go around. Adding a team makes sense especially since they already own a home park that is being used in the AZL(The Diamondbacks AZL affiliate played at Salt River Fields on Monday). If the Rockies plan to continue drafting young upside guys and spending in the IFA market, they really ought to add an additional step where the players on average are a full year younger.
Dominican Summer League: DSL Rockies
DSL Rockies 7 DSL Mets 2
W: Fernandez, J (2-2, 3.00) ; L: Encarnacion, R (1-1, 1.37)
Pedro Gonzalez has received some prospect love lately, as well he should as a player slugging .500 as a 17 year old in run suppressing league at a premium defensive position. This game however featured an opportunity to draw attention two a pair of other 17 year olds who are worth a look, 2B Franklin Garcia and C Javier Guevara. Garcia's 2-4 night brought his line to .298/.356/.351 which is excellent for a middle infielder in that league, Guevara hit his second home run of the year and his season line of .280/.353/.453 includes a .333/.412 /.700 line in July. Starting pitcher Breiling Eusebio is 18 but his 1.30ERA and 42ks in 41ip over eight starts means this is a guy that will be worth keepin an eye on as he climbs the ladder.
Double-A: New Britain Rock Cats
PPD: Wet Grounds
