Chad Bettis looks for a strong start to the second half of the season

The Rockies will try to win their first game of the second half tonight against the Padres.

Chad Bettis ended the first half of the season with an uneven performance against the Braves. He gave up three runs on six hits in six innings of work. Bettis struck out eight in that outing, which is good, but he also walked five, and that is bad. He enters the game with a 4.91 ERA in 69 2/3 innings. Bettis will make his second career start against the Padres. His first start came in 2013, also in San Diego, but Bettis only threw three innings in what was a bullpen game. He didn't allow any runs on two hits, and he struck out four while walking zero.

The Padres counter with Tyson Ross. Ross is distinct among MLB starters because he throws sliders more than anyone else. He's thrown 45.7 percent of his pitches this season for sliders, which is five percent more than Chris Archer, who has thrown the second most sliders among starters. Ross faced the Rockies earlier this season. On April 23 at Coors Field, the Rockies got to Ross for two runs in his six innings of work. He struck out seven and walked four. The Rockies didn't exactly rough him up, but the two runs were enough for the win.
