The Rockies watched a seven-run lead disappear but managed to rally in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with an 8-7 victory.
The Rockies offense got after the Rangers’ starting pitcher Nick Martinez rather quickly. Nolan Arenado kicked off the scoring in the first with a two-run double over the head of Delino Deshields, and Ben Paulsen followed it up with an RBI single up the middle.
The Rockies continued the scoring in the second with an RBI single from Charlie Blackmon followed by an RBI triple from DJ LeMahieu. Troy Tulowitzki capped off the four-run inning with a 443-foot bomb to extend the Rockies lead to 7-0.
Nick Martinez finished the night with four innings pitched and seven earned runs.
The Rangers started to chip their way back in during the third inning when they picked up two runs on RBI singles from Tomas Telis and Prince Fielder.
Things started to get weird in the fifth. With Prince Fielder up and runners on second and third with one out, Fielder smoked a groundball to Ben Paulsen. Paulsen then slowly trotted to first base to get the out and proceeded towards the dugout, thinking there were three outs. Rougned Odor took advantage of Paulsen's mental lapse and took off for the plate, turning an infield groundball into two runs, shortening the Rockies lead 7-5.
Chris Rusin pitched six innings, allowing seven hits while striking out five and walking one. Just two of the five runs allowed were earned. Rusin has now allowed 15 runs in his last four starts, with just seven of the runs earned.
The Rangers got one run closer in the seventh after Boone Logan allowed a single to Prince Fielder followed by an RBI double from Adrian Beltre against Tommy Kahnle.
LaTroy Hawkins came in on relief in the eighth and threw a clean inning. Hawkins hasn't allowed a run in 13 straight appearances.
The Rockies had a golden opportunity to tack on some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth after Sam Freeman walked the bases loaded, but Tanner Scheppers was able to come in and get DJ LeMahieu to fly out to end the inning. The Rockies had not had a hit since the second inning when Tulo hit a home run.
The Rangers didn’t let this game end quietly as they managed to tie it up against closer John Axford when Adrian Beltre drove in the tying run to send things into the bottom of the ninth.
The Rockies cracked back into the hit column with back-to-back singles from Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez to lead off the inning. Drew Stubbs replaced Tulo as the baserunner at second base.
With one out in the ninth inning, Ben Paulsen ripped a ball into the left-center alley and scored the winning run, redeeming himself from his earlier miscue and sealing a 8-7 Rockies victory.
