The Rockies avoided getting shut out at Coors Field for the second time in five days with a couple of runs in the ninth, but they lost 5-2.
The Rockies fell behind early and were never able to rally against Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto. The Reds did most of their damage in the third inning. Billy Hamilton, Brandon Phillips, and Joey Votto opened the frame with three consecutive singles, which plated a run. Then, with nobody out, Todd Frazier capped off the inning with a three run home run off of starter Chris Rusin. The Reds added a couple more hits in the inning, but no more runs. In the fourth inning, Hamilton produced a run with a single, a steal, and an advancement to third base on a Ben Paulsen error. Hamilton scored on a groundout.
In all, Rusin had an ugly outing. He threw five innings and allowed five runs on ten hits. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter. It didn't matter anyhow. The Rockies couldn't get anything going against Cueto. They got six base runners—four hits, a walk, and a hit batsman—in six separate innings against Cueto.
The Rockies finally got two runners on base in the same inning in the ninth. DJ LeMahieu and Carlos Gonzalez each singled against reliever Jumbo Diaz. Daniel Descalso drove LeMahieu in on a ground out. Descales pinch hit for Nolan Arenado, who was hit in the hand in the seventh inning. Corey Dickerson then reached on an error, scoring CarGo. With Dickerson on base and pinch hitter Michael McKenry coming up, the Reds went to Aroldis Chapman.
Then, it ended.
