The Rockies managed to put together a rally in the ninth to take the lead, but John Axford blew another to save as the Rockies lost 9-8.
The Rockies provided some early run support in the third inning when Carlos Gonzalez continued his hot streak with a two-run shot just over the left-field wall. DJ LeMahieu singled in two more runs in the fourth to get the Rockies out to a 4-0 lead.
Jorge De La Rosa was pitching like an ace through the first three innings, mixing in his changeup to keep the Cubs' hitters off balance at the plate.
When De La Rosa came out in the fourth, his command had vanished. He quickly walked the first two batters he faced and Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Jorge Soler followed those walks with three straight singles. The Cubs were suddenly right back in the game and trailed by just one run. They didn't stop there as Starlin Castro drove in a run and Addison Russell capped off the inning with an RBI double.
What was once a promising four-run lead with the Rockies ace on the mound ended with De La Rosa leaving after just 3 2/3 innings with the Rockies trailing 6-4.
Christian Friedrich and Tommy Kahnle came in and provided a solid 3 1/3 innings of relief, with just one unearned run due to an unusual throwing error from Nolan Arenado. The Cubs led the Rockies 7-4 through six innings.
The Rockies got the tying run up to the plate after Carlos Gonzalez and Corey Dickerson singled, but Michael McKenry flew out to right field to end the eighth inning.
Things started to get interesting in the ninth when Daniel Descalso led off with a pinch-hit home run to bring the Rockies within two runs. After a single from Charlie Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu hit a towering double to right field to put the tying run at second base with no outs. Troy Tulowitzki drove in a run on an RBI groundout, and Carlos Gonzalez completed the comeback with a two-run rocket into the right-field stands.
John Axford came in to close things out, but his horrendous stretch continued as he served up a two-run walk-off bomb to Kris Bryant.
