What looked like a mismatch on paper turned out to be a mismatch on the field as the Rockies dropped the second game of their four-game series in St. Louis, 7-0.
Cardinals starter Michael Wacha allowed just four hits and a walk in seven shutout innings while striking out seven in the win. The only extra-base hit against Wacha was a first-inning double by Carlos Gonzalez.
Meanwhile, Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick lasted just one inning before leaving the game with shoulder inflammation. In that inning he allowed two runs on four hits, including a home run to Matt Carpenter.
Left-hander Aaron Laffey came on for Kendrick in the second and pitched three scoreless innings to keep the score at 2-0 through four innings. Gonzalez Germen pitched a clean fifth inning before he and Christian Friedrich combined to allow five runs in the sixth inning capped by a two-run home run by Jhonny Peralta that gave St. Louis a 7-0 lead.
After Wacha pitched a scoreless seventh, Randy Choate and Seth Maness each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the shutout for the Cardinals.
The Rockies will look to snap their three-game losing streak tomorrow as Jorge De La Rosa takes on Lance Lynn at 5:15 p.m. Mountain time.
