Jorge De La Rosa, Rockies take down Cardinals, 6-2

The Rockies got good pitching and the benefit of some extra-base power in a win over St. Louis.

Jorge De La Rosa tossed 6⅔ innings of two-run ball and was helped by home runs from Nolan Arenado and Ben Paulsen in the Colorado Rockies' 6-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

It was a much better showing from the Rockies than on Friday night, when Colorado's offense was held scoreless and its pitching staff was beaten up by a far superior Cardinals team. The Rockies on Saturday showed what they're capable of on the rare occasion they have a competent arm on the hill. De La Rosa fired 67 strikes against just 29 balls and didn't walk a single batter.

Meanwhile, the Rockies' offense held up their end of the deal, coming through with 11 hits, six of which went for extra bases. Arenado, Paulsen, Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu delivered two hits apiece. Arenado's two-run homer in the fourth inning was his 26th round tripper of the season.

In a possible sneak preview of what Colorado could decide to do with its vacant closer role, Tommy Kahnle recorded the final four outs of the game. Kahnle struck out a batter and didn't allow a baserunner while lowering his ERA to 2.81.

The Rockies will try to even up the series on Sunday afternoon in the finale. Yohan Flande and his respectable 3.68 ERA will take the mound opposite Jaime Garcia.
