Rockies avoid sweep with 5-0 victory over the Padres as Rusin throws complete game shutout

Chris Rusin threw Rockies first complete game shutout this season; the Rockies offense scored five runs with a big assist from Derek Norris.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Chris Rusin retired the last ten batters he faced to complete his first complete game shutout, and the first for the Rockies this season, including striking out the last two batters he faced. Rusin threw only 106 pitches, 71 strikes, to completely baffle the Padres. Despite some early struggles against Ian Kennedy, the offense rewarded Rusin with more than enough runs to win the game.

The game started out with the typical Coors Field pitcher's duel, with the first hit not being recorded by either team until the third inning—a single by Melvin Upton Jr. up the middle. Both pitcher's seemed to have benefited from CB Buckner's generous strike zone.

Chris Rusin gave up a solitary single in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings, though none of the Padres advanced to second base. Rusin erased the first base runner on a nice fielding play, turning Ian Kennedy's attempted sacrifice bunt into a double play.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, as Ian Kennedy retired the first 11 batters he faced, including six strikeouts. That's when Carlos Gonzalez decided to give the Rockies all the runs they would need with a solo shot to center field. It was his 27th home run of the year.

The Padres finally mounted an offensive attack in the sixth inning with two two out singles and walk by Justin Upton to load the bases. On the first pitch to Jedd Gyorko, the second base umpire initially called a balk for Rusin's failure to pause, but the rest of the umpiring crew correctly overturned the call, leaving the bases full. Padres manager Pat Murphy was ejected for arguing the decision. Rusin then got Gyorko to ground out to Nolan Arenado to escape the jam.

The Rockies finally provided Rusin some extra breathing room in the seventh inning with a big assist from Derek Norris. Kennedy retired the first two batters in the inning in the same manner as he had the rest of the Rockies up till that point: quickly. Arenado then hit an infield pop-up to first baseman Derek Norris, but Norris couldn't handle it and record the out. The Rockies capitalized quickly with a double from Paulsen that put runners at second and third before the Padres intentionally walked feared hitter DJ LMahieu to face Michael McKenry. McKenry then drove the first pitch he saw to the right field wall, scoring all three runners and putting the finishing touches on the win.
