The Colorado Rockies fell to 25 games under .500 with a 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves in the opening game of a three-game set at Turner Field on Monday.
The Braves tagged Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa for five runs on nine hits and four walks in seven innings. De La Rosa struck out three batters, allowed a pair of homers and threw 63 of 104 pitches for strikes on yet another night during which he struggled with his command.
Both Charlie Blackmon and Ben Paulsen, who played their high school ball not far from Atlanta, homered as part of two-hit performances. The rest of the Rockies offense combined for just two hits, neither of which came off the bats of sluggers Carlos Gonzalez and Nolan Arenado.
Gonzalez left the game after the top of the fifth inning with right knee soreness, an injury that likely occurred when he slid into the outfield wall while making a catch in the third inning. The star right fielder is day to day, according to the Rockies.
With the loss, Colorado (49-74) remains percentage points behind (ahead of?) the Miami Marlins for the worst record in the majors, which naturally would grant the Rockies the No. 1 pick in the 2016 MLB Draft if they're able to stay the course.
