Rockies beat the Braves 6-3 and get a rare series win in Atlanta

Late offense buoyed the Rockies tonight

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Rockies rode some late offense to win the game and the series against the Atlanta Braves. Tonight they scored four in the seventh against Shelby Miller and tacked on two more in the eighth--courtesy of a Brandon Barnes home run--to win 6-3. Some gutsy work by the bullpen preserved the victory.

Yohan Flande was solid through five innings, allowing just one run. But back to back home runs by Jonny Gomes and Adonis Garcia put the Rockies down 3-0 in the sixth. Flande was pulled and it felt like the game was done. However, that wasn't the case.

Earlier, the Rockies scraped four hits against Miller in the first two innings, but couldn't get a run across. After that he settled in, retiring 14 straight from the third inning through the sixth. But Ben Paulsen greeted Miller with a double leading off the seventh, and the rally was on. Daniel Descalso singled him home, and then Brandon Barnes doubled to put runners on second and third. With two outs Charlie Blackmon benefited from a high chopper off the plate to score a run. And then, in the biggest blow, Jose Reyes tripled to the right center field gap to put the Rockies up 4-3.

Later, Barnes slapped a homer to deep left to extend the lead to 6-3. With the Rockies' shaky bullpen, that insurance was much appreciated.

In the bottom of the seventh, it seemed like the familiar blow-up was occurring. Christian Friedrich walked the lefty Michael Bourn, and then Jairo Diaz allowed a couple baserunners to load it up. But he got Andrelton Simmons to ground out to short stop to end the threat and preserve the lead.

Jon Axford allowed a couple baserunners, but he shut it down with a strikeout of Pedro Ciriaco.

So the Rockies actually won a series in Atlanta and have won two in a row. That feels pretty good. The Rocks are on to Pittsburgh tomorrow.
