Colorado Rockies get home runs from Carlos Gonzalez, Jose Reyes, drop game to Pirates, 5-3

A pair of home runs were not enough for the Rockies as they lost a 5-3 game in Pittsburgh.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rockies got home runs from Jose Reyes and Carlos Gonzalez, but could produce no other offense in a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Rockies starter Jon Gray bounced back from his rough start against the Mets last Friday, but was not as sharp as he was in his starts against the Mets in New York nearly three weeks ago or his start against the Padres at Coors Field on August 15. He pitched 4⅓ innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts, throwing 89 pitches, 55 for strikes.

Pittsburgh got on the board against Gray in the first inning when a bloop single from Jung-Ho Kang brought home Andrew McCutchen, who had singled and stolen second. Kang hurt Gray again in the third, doubling home Gregory Polanco to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

The Rockies finally got to Pirates starter Francisco Liriano in the fifth when Kyle Parker walked and came around to score on a home run from Reyes that hit the bottom of the foul pole in left field, tying the game at two.

Gray surprisingly came out for the fifth and promptly allowed a double down the right-field line to Polanco, who advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Starling Marte, putting the Pirates up, 3-2.

Pittsburgh's lead was short-lived, however, as Gonzalez leveled the score again with his 31st home run of the season, a solo shot against Liriano.

The Pirates took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth, when a pair of walks came back to haunt Rockies reliever Scott Oberg, as both free passes he issued came around to score on singles from pinch hitter Josh Harrison and Polanco.

Pirates closer Mark Melancon pitched a clean ninth to close out the game.

The Rockies will look to even the series tomorrow as Chris Rusin takes on J.A. Happ.
