Rockies lose to Pirates, 4-3

A late rally wasn't enough to propel the Rockies to victory, as they lost to the Pirates 4-to-3.

The Rockies lost to the Pirates 4-to-3 tonight.

Things didn't start out well for Chris Rusin. After retiring Gregory Polanco to lead off the bottom of the first, Rusin allowed a couple of singles and an Aramis Ramirez three-run dinger. It meant that Rusin had allowed 14 runs in his last 2 1/3 innings pitched. He settled down after that though. Over the next five innings, Rusin allowed five baserunners total—three walks and a couple of singles. In the end, Rusin allowed three runs in six innings of work. He struck out three to match his three walks. The Pirates added a run in the seventh off of Jason Gurka, who made his major league debut.

It didn't matter much, as the Rockies couldn't solve noted pitching master J.A. Happ. Brandon Barnes and Rusin combined to tag Happ for a run. Rusin singled Barnes in after he doubled in the top of the third inning. The Rockies threatened in the top of the sixth inning and ran Happ from the game with two outs and two runners on, but they couldn't push a run across.

The Rockies made things very interesting in the ninth. Ben Paulsen led off with a single against Mark Melancon, and Nick Hundley followed it up with a two-run home run to make it a 4-to-3 game. Brandon Barnes then singled to put the tying run on base with nobody out. Daniel Descalso then lobbed a ball to second baseman Josh Harrison, who almost doubled Barnes off at first base. After that, Charlie Blackmon lined out to Harrison, and this time Barnes was doubled up. That ended the game.

The Rockies will attempt to avoid the sweep tomorrow, as Jorge De La Rosa takes on Charlie Morton.
