Colorado Rockies rally comes up short, lose to Mariners 8-7

The Rockies rallied for three runs in the ninth, but came up short as they lost 8-7.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Rockies managed 18 hits but were unable to overcome an early deficit as they dropped game one against Seattle 8-7.

The Mariners jumped on Eddie Butler rather quickly as they tagged him for four runs in the first inning. Robison Cano and Brad Miller had an RBI single apiece and Jesus Montero drove in two runners with a double.

The Rockies countered in the bottom of the inning when Jose Reyes drove in a run with an RBI single in his first home at bat as a Rockie.

Butler bounced back quickly the next inning, but then allowed back-to-back solo homers with two outs to Kyle Seager and Nelson Cruz. The Mariners tacked on another run in the third inning with a two-out homer from Brad Miller.

Butler went out on a positive note, as he got the last three batters he faced to ground out. Butler's night was over after four innings, as he allowed seven hits, three of them home runs, while striking out two and walking one. This was another disappointing start for Butler who has yet find his groove in the big leagues.

The Rockies managed to chip away at the lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Drew Stubbs and Jose Reyes. Charlie Blackmon tacked on another run in the sixth with an RBI double, but that was quickly erased after Robinson Cano drove in Kyle Seager on a line-drive double to right field.

Christian Bergman provided solid relief in his first game back from the disabled list, going 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one run. Gonzalez Germen followed with a clean 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the ninth as Ben Paulsen closed the gap to two with a double, scoring Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez. Nick Hundley followed with an RBI single of his own to bring the score to 8-7.

Charlie Blackmon came to the plate with four hits in the game and the tying run on third base, but flew out to center field to seal the loss.

This was a frustrating loss, but at least we get to see Jon Gray make his MLB debut tomorrow at 6:40 pm MT.
