The Rockies offense waited until the bottom of the ninth to really make an appearance, but completed the comeback with a late rally. Chad Bettis allowed four earned runs on 11 hits through six innings and the Rockies' bats failed to do much of anything through most of the game, but the Rockies emerged with the 5-4 win.
The Diamondbacks scored first in the top of the third inning. Chris Owings opened the inning with a leadoff single and advanced to second on Robbie Ray's sac bunt. Ender Inciarte singled to plate Owings and A.J. Pollock hit his 14th home run of the year to put the Diamondbacks up 3-0. Bettis allowed a two-out single later in the inning, but he was able to escape without any further damage.
Charlie Blackmon helped the Rockies narrow the deficit in the bottom half of the inning, leading off with a triple and scoring on a grounder from Jose Reyes. The Rockies couldn't do much of anything in the next frame, with DJ LeMahieu stranded after hitting a leadoff double.
The Diamondbacks reestablished their lead of three in the top of the fifth. Bettis struck out both Inciarte and Pollock to start the inning, but Paul Goldschmidt doubled and later scored on Peralta's single. The Rockies' starter was able to limit the damage to just the one run and pitched a scoreless sixth inning before being replaced in the seventh by Gonzalez Germen, who retired the two batters he faced. Christian Friedrich was then brought in and struck out David Peralta for the inning's final out.
The Rockies threatened in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Charlie Blackmon's leadoff double. After advancing to third on Reyes' groundout, Blackmon seemed primed to cross the plate with Arenado, CarGo, and DJ due up. Randall Delgado, however, was able to escape the inning with the Diamondbacks' lead preserved.
Simon Castro pitched a clean eighth to keep the Rockies in the game, striking out Castillo and retiring Lamb and Gosselin. Nick Hundley led off the Rockies' half of the eighth with a single to center, but was picked off at first with one out. Brandon Barnes fought off a handful of pitches on a 2-2 count, but grounded out to third to end the inning.
Castro remained on the mound to pitch the ninth, getting the first batter he faced to fly out to CarGo. Charlie Blackmon made a great diving effort to take a hit away from Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the inning's second out before Castro got Inciarte to ground out to Jose Reyes. Castro did a nice job of pounding the strike zone tonight and deservedly got two innings of work.
Brad Ziegler came on for the Diamondbacks to close the game. Daniel Descalso singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Reyes' one-out double. With two men on, Nolan Arenado launched a ball that just missed clearing the fence to cut the Diamondbacks' lead to just a single run. An out later, DJ LeMahieu hit a ball that bounced off of Ziegler's glove. The pitcher tried to throw to first, but fell as he was doing so and threw it out of play, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Nick Hundley stepped up with the winning runner on second and drew a walk on a 3-2 count.
Ben Paulsen came to the plate with the bases loaded against Mark Reynolds and swatted a ball up the middle to plate two runs and give the Rockies the walk-off victory.
