Carlos Gonzalez hits grand slam to lift Rockies to 5-4 win over Nationals

CarGo hit yet another clutch home run in the late innings. This time, the Rockies' bullpen prevented any further drama.

Guys, he did it again.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez hit another clutch, late-inning home run -- this time, a grand slam in the top of the eighth -- to send his team to a win. Drew Storen and the Washington Nationals were the victims on this occasion, which saw CarGo turn a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead on one swift, powerful swing on a 1-0 fastball.

The Rockies' bullpen duo of John Axford and Tommy Kahnle preserved the lead, with the latter earning his first career save -- on his 26th birthday, no less. Colorado now has consecutive thrilling, come-from-behind victories under its belt.

Gonzalez, who entered Friday hitting .346/.393/.865 in Late & Close situations, per Baseball-Reference, smoked his 10th seventh-inning-or-later homer, many of which have either tied the game or given the Rockies the lead. In this case, the grand slam was setup by a one-out walk from Daniel Descalso and consecutive singles off the bats of Jose Reyes on Nolan Arenado.

With two outs, Gonzalez strode to the plate, and two pitches later, displayed his familiar "drop the bat and walk" long ball celebration.

The memorable homer took Jorge De La Rosa, who allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and a couple of walks in six innings, off the hook. The Rockies' ace was picked up by a tremendous relief performance from Axford, Kahnle and Scott Oberg. The trio combined for five strikeouts -- and four walks, in typical Rockies fashion -- in three innings.

Arenado led the Rockies' offense with three hits. Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with the four big RBI and Ben Paulsen added a hit and knocked in a run.

Colorado's win was its 21st on the road this season, matching the team's 2014 total in that department.
