Chris Rusin entered the game looking to bounce back from a string of less than stellar performances that culminated in a stinker in his last outing which lasted just four innings. He needed 92 pitches in that game to get through just four innings in which he allowed six runs on eight hits and four walks. Although not great, Rusin's start today kept the Rockies in the game and the team's bats helped them complete the three-game sweep of the Dodgers, thereby ensuring that the division title wouldn't be awarded to them just yet.
The Dodgers' first run would come courtesy of a rare error from Nolan Arenado as Alex Wood reached first on a throwing error that scored Alex Guerrero, although Wilin Rosario was able to make Joc Pedersen pay for trying to take third for the inning's third out.
The Rockies answered in the bottom half of the inning when Corey Dickerson got things going with a two-out double. In for Cristhian Adames, who appears to have left with a knock after a collision with Pederson in the previous inning, Rafael Ynoa doubled home Dickerson to put the Rockies on the board and tie the game. That tie, however, would not last long as the Dodgers tacked on three in third inning.
The Rockies got one back in the bottom half of the inning as the teams traded runs. Wilin Rosario singled to drive in DJ LeMahieu before Dickerson struck out with two runners on. Rusin then allowed a double to Alex Wood to lead off the fourth inning, but he was able to settle down and see out the inning without further trouble.
The Rockies claimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth by putting up a four-spot on Wood. The inning's highlight was Nolan Arenado's 41st home run of the year, which ties him with Bryce Harper for most in the National League. The scoring would abate in the following inning, but Rusin's day was over after he allowed another hit to Wood in the fifth inning after getting an out. Gonzalez Germen replaced Rusin and, although he allowed two hits, escaped the fifth without any runs being scored.
Wood was pulled in the bottom of the fifth after allowing two hits and a sac fly, which placed runners on third and second. Pedro Baez replaced the starter and promptly saw Tommy Murphy and Ben Paulsen cross the plate courtesy of sacs from LeMahieu and Arenado. Howell replaced Baez to stem the bleeding, but the reliever advanced the runners with a balk and then allowed an RBI-single to CarGo.
Scott Oberg, Boone Logan, and Jairo Diaz combined to keep the Dodgers off the scoreboard in seventh and eighth innings, allowing two hits and striking out just one. The Rockies bats put things to bed in the bottom of the eighth. Paulsen and Blackmon drew two straight walks off of Ian Thomas to start the inning, promptly forcing a switch to Jim Johnson. After LeMahieu struck out, Nolan Arenado notched his fifth RBI of the game with a single. CarGo then singled to load the bases before Kyle Parker came in to hit for Diaz. A liner to center field scored two to give the Rockies a 12-4 lead.
Jason Gurka came on in the ninth to see off the Dodgers. After allowing a leadoff double to Chase Utley, Gurka whiffed A.J. Ellis and Corey Seager. The Dodgers would score a consolation run off of a ground-rule double.
