MLB wants international draft in new CBA with players | ESPN
Buster Olney reports some of the first news on the ongoing collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations. Negotiations have been quiet on the public front, so as to not distract from the MLB Playoffs. However, behind the scenes, things are getting done to hopefully have a new CBA in place before the current on expires in December.
Rob Manfred has been pushing for a draft to replace the international signings of amateur free agents and it seems that it might be a priority for them in the current negotiations. While the union would be philosophically opposed to it, it also wouldn’t affect any current members of the union so they may be more willing to make concessions on this matter to get changes that would affect the current membership.
MLB Pushing For International Draft In CBA Negotiations | MLB Trade Rumors
Steve Adams piggy backs on Olney’s article and delved in depth to some of the lesser known issues of the the current system. Unfortunately, there is a massive amount of corruption and despite it being a system that would seemingly give the players the most power, it instead seems to be giving the power and control to their handlers and in some extreme cases the cartels.
The Rockies have had success under the current system despite not taking advantage of some of the loopholes to spend extravagantly one year and sit out the following. They have a steady stream of prospects from their DSL program in every wave of future prospects. However, preventing the large market teams from being able to hog the biggest names in the market every year would probably be a plus for the Rockies long-term.
Ryan Spilborghs: Improving September Baseball | MLB Trade Rumors
Ryan Spilborghs continues his writing for MLBTR and this time writes about his proposed solutions to the September issues that he addressed in his last article. He presents a very detailed plan that would have to be addressed in the current CBA negotiations.
