The White Sox fire sale may have only begun and the Rockies may benefit

The Colorado Rockies may be a minor beneficiary of the reported Chris Sale trade between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. The trade appears to be signaling a rebuild for the White Sox and may lead to them trading some of their other major pieces, including Jose Abreu.

The Rockies and White Sox have reportedly already had preliminary discussions about a possible trade. Those discussions may have been partially dependent upon the whether or not the White Sox decided to sell off their veterans after a disappointing season last year.

The Sale trade shows the type of return that the White Sox would want. The trade package for Sale was four prospects though they were very highly regarded ones. This confirms what Thomas Harding reported that the White Sox wanted multiple prospects from the Rockies in exchange for Abreu.

While there may be some fears that the trade return for Sale would establish the market for Abreu, that is not the case. In this era, proven aces have set a market level that is much higher than what even star position players have returned. Factor in the barren free agent pitching market compared to a first base market that has multiple quality options and the return for Abreu should be much more reasonable.

The winter meetings are in full swing, and the Rockies are looking to invest heavily at first base. While Abreu may not be the ultimate solution, the chances of it seemed to have gotten just a little bit higher. As always, Purple Row will have more on this story as it develops.
