Andrew McCutchen homers three times as the Pirates drop the Rockies 9-4

Jorge De La Rosa's struggles continue as Andrew McCutchen and the Pirates put a beat down on the Rockies Tuesday night.

Sigh.

The Rockies offense was able to get four runs off of Gerrit Cole, but it wasn’t enough to back up a shaky Jorge De La Rosa as the Rockies lost their fourth straight game with a final score of 9-4.

De La Rosa’s struggles began early as he allowed back-to-back bombs off the bat of Andrew McCutchen and David Freese. Josh Harrison capped off the inning with an RBI single to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

McCutchen homered again the very next inning to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead.

Ben Paulsen led off the second with a base hit, and was eventually driven in after a passed ball and back-to-back groundouts to bring the Rockies within three.

De La Rosa led off the third inning with a ground out, and seemed to have pulled his groin while running up the line and was pulled from the game. He allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five. It’s likely this could result in a DL stint, especially given his struggles on the mound.

Nolan Arenado kicked off the fourth inning with a long ball to center field to bring the score to 4-2. His eighth home run of the year.

Arenado just about tied up the game the following inning after he ripped a single to left field with the bases loaded, but Gerardo Parra, the tying run, was thrown out at home plate by left fielder Starling Marte. The call was challenged, but replay ultimately confirmed the original call.

In the top of the sixth, Andrew McCutchen came up with two runners on and – once again – hit the ball out of the park. This time off of Christian Bergman. McCutchen finished the night with three homers and five RBI. Gonzalez Germen came in on relief for Bergman, and quickly served up a home run to Starling Marte, and the game was officially out of reach.

Scott Oberg and Carlos Estevez both got in some work, combining to allow one run over three innings.

The Rockies went rather quietly in the ninth and dropped the second game of the four-game series against the Pirates 9-4.

Jon Gray will take the mound tomorrow night for the Rockies.
