The San Diego Padres were due to break out. So, uh, they broke out. Eighteen hits and thirteen runs later, the Colorado Rockies' home opener on Friday afternoon was mercifully over — but not before shortstop Trevor Story went and made a little history... again. Hey, at least one good thing happened.
Now, the Rockies hand the ball to Jorge De La Rosa tonight in an attempt to even up the series with San Diego. De La Rosa will go up against a familiar face, old friend Drew Pomeranz, who pitched—and struggled—in the big leagues for the Rockies from 2011-13 after he was acquired in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade. But he's a different pitcher now, they say.
De La Rosa, who turned 35 earlier this week, has had no such trouble at Coors Field like Pomeranz; the veteran lefty only lasted 4.2 innings in his debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Opening Day, but he did strike out eight hitters against just two walks. In his career, the native of Mexico is 48-16 with a 4.16 ERA in 93 games (88 starts) in Denver.
Aside from all the pitcher talk, well, there's Story. He couldn't possibly hit more home runs... right? And then there's the usual stuff; the Rockies' offense may be deceptively bad again this year (but they are seeing more pitches!), and the bullpen has been struggling (but maybe it's not getting used the right way!).
Tonight's game is important. You ought to play well at home, even if you're a bad team. You really ought to play well at home against what looks to be another bad team. And you really, really ought to come away with a win to set up a Sunday rubber match when you find yourselves led by your ace, who has been nails at your home park for, like, the last twenty-five straight seasons.
Lace 'em up.
Game time is 6:10 pm MT. Here's what the Rockies are throwin' out there:
Also of note... our very own Jordan Freemyer is covering the game at Coors Field tonight. He'll be covering quite a few of these home tilts, so, he's worth the follow on Twitter if you're into that kind of thing. (Bryan only lets me do spring training...)
